Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius was not unlucky in conceding Real Madrid's first goal in the Champions League final – according to the man who scored it.
Karius was left in tears afterwards following a mistake that allowed Karim Benzema to snaffle the Spanish side's opener in the Kiev showdown.
The Reds shot-stopper, in attempting to initiate an attack, threw the ball too close to Benzema and the Real Madrid striker stuck out a leg to divert it over the line.
But Benzema believes the goal, rather than being a freak, was instead a product of his hard work.
“My goal from Kiev, it was not a matter of luck,” he said to Kuwaiti television, as reported by AS.
“I do not believe in luck, it's a matter of work.
“It's an easy goal but you have to be there, in the right place and at the right time, to put it in.”
Karius later made another mistake by allowing Gareth Bale's speculative shot to slip through his hands as Liverpool slumped to a 3-1 defeat.
