Martins has been on Sporting’s books his entire career having
progressed through their youth system and has been one of the most
exciting young attackers in Portuguese football in recent years. The
23-year-old starred for Sporting last season after providing 13 goals
and 13 assists to earn a place in the Portugal World Cup squad.
However, Martins is set to leave the Estadio Jose Alvalade following a turbulent campaign as the attacker is one of several players who have decided to cancel their contracts using ‘just cause’ after they were attacked by furious fans at the clubs training ground last month after missing out on the Champions League.
Goalkeeper Rui Patricio has already joined Wolves and Martins has joined William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Ribeiro, Bas Dost and Daniel Podence in terminating their contracts so they are all looking for new clubs this summer.
